It’s no secret that I love to travel, and playing the credit card points game is how I do it.
I have been traveling since birth, and only recently began to share how I do it as luxuriously and free as possible. Travel hacking is the way to go! So what is travel hacking? Essentially using the perks, points, and miles from credit cards. That’s it! No gimmicks, just put everyday purchases on your card, pay the balance each month, and rack up the points.
Favorite Credit Card #1: Chase Sapphire Preferred
This is my go-to card, and so great if you are just starting your travel hacking journey! With a low annual fee of $95, and tons of member perks plus a sizable bonus, this is a no-brainer for your wallet. The spending categories of the CSP (2x on travel, 3x on streaming services, and more) makes sense for the bulk of typical spending habits for most people. This means you get rewarded extra for purchases you are already making. If you are interested in learning more and applying, this link will take you to my referral page!
Favorite Credit Card #2: Amex Gold
The Amex Gold is the newest card in my lineup, and so far I am loving it. As a huuuuge foodie, this card gives my 4x the points on US supermarkets as well as restaurants. It also gives me a $10 credit each month directly into my Uber account for food or rides – I use it on food, of course! There are also a ton of other benefits that I am going to take advantage of in 2023, like access to The Hotel Collection. This card does have a bigger annual fee of $250, but with a 90K point sign up bonus, I’d say it’s worth it for now. Here is my referral link, but if you put it into a private browser, you may see a higher sign up bonus!
Favorite Credit Card #3: Chase Ink Business Cash
Before you continue reading, keep in mind that more than likely you are eligible for a business credit card! They are so valuable in terms of earning points, especially with sign up bonuses. Right now, this card has a $900 bonus cash back, but that actually transfers to 90K points – I know, it’s amazing! You can also transfer those points to your personal card account to stack some serious value. 5x on internet, cable and phone, and 5x at office stores, this card is one of my favorites – especially around the holidays.
There are a few credit cards I have my eyes on that I haven’t yet applied for, but plan to very soon. I wanted to make sure I shared them with you!
Capital One Venture X is a newer product for the Capital One credit card lineup, and has received raving reviews! Not only do you get 2x the points on every purchase & additional specific spending category bonus points, this card also comes with lounge access, Hertz President’s Circle status, $100 credit towards Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and more. Honestly, it’s an impressive card for just a $395 annual fee – especially because it compares to a handful of luxury cards with $500+ annual fees. The only reason I haven’t applied yet is because I want to take time to ensure I’ll use all of the benefits once I am approved. (That’s part of my credit card strategy!)
The World of Hyatt visa is the next card I’ll be adding to my lineup mainly because it’s a goal of mine to reach Globalist status in 2023. Hyatt is my hotel brand of choice – I adore the Thompson line the most – and reaching Globalist status gives you a ton of perks as a traveler! The current bonus points on the credit card are pretty low, so I’m waiting a little while before applying. In terms of benefits, cardholders receive a free 1 night stay certificate at any category 1-4 Hyatt – that alone makes the $95 annual fee worthwhile. Cardholders also receive instant Discoverist status as well as 5 qualifying nights, which really helps jumpstart the trek to Globalist!
When used properly, credit cards can be a huge asset and make free and nearly free travel possible!
